The London School of Capoeira was the first official capoeira school to open in the UK, in 1988. Since then schools have sprouted throughout the country, although no central association currently exists.
Schools teach their own style based on groups they are connected with in Brazil.
Bia Viana of Origens do Brasil in Bournemouth: "The master and teachers are very strict about how you sing, how you clap, your uniform, your game, your behaviour. In Brazil there are many groups who compete and style is the principle thing - how you do your Ginga." (Ginga is the fundamental move in the game, from which other moves are launched.)
"Expression is very important, to show your personality," she adds.
Valdir Gomes, known as Axé, who teaches at the London school says: "I think what is most important is the strength of will - you have to remain focused on everything, especially on the person that you are playing with, who can easily knock you down.
